When authors truly self-publish (versus using a POD or vanity press), they start a small business and most small businesses take 3 to 5 years to turn a profit. So make sure you have a good product to sell, build a plan and then spend time each week building your business. It's hard work and so are most endeavors worth pursuing. Your advice is sound.
