Hey there Lisa,

Actually, my website is probably outdated too; all information about applying for a Monbusho is more than two years old, so do take it with a grain of salt!

Pretty much any thoughts I have about the Monbusho application process are contained in these blog entries; for anything not contained here, your guess is as good as mine. Good luck to you!

Hi Lars,

Hallelujah, for finding your website agmongst a sea of links containing vague and outdated Monbusho information. I have checked every online website that has anything to do with the scholarship.

Allow me to introduce myself. I`m a 26 year old Canadian woman with parents of Japanese and Danish roots. I studied in Aichi for half a year 5 years ago (my first experience in Japan and wtih Japanese), studied in Kyoto at Ritsumeikan Daigaku for a year 2 years ago, and worked as an ALT on JET in the tiniest (pop 1700) town in Fukushima prefecture last year. I`m currently living in Osaka, working as a private ALT and hoping to continue my love affair with Japan with the help of Monbusho. I passed the JLPT 2 this year (albeit after 2 prior attempts). I feel that I would do well in an interview and fine on the English and Japanese tests but I`m not sure how to go about actually locating a professor who is willing to take me on as a research student. What are your thoughts on this? I ultimately want to study at a university in Kansai, preferably Kyoto. And will you be taking the 6 months of Japanese language schooling before you start your research? Thanks in advance for any information you can provide. If you have time, please email my Gmail address. I would appreciate it so much.

The only thing that i can tell you is apply from outside Japan you will receive it surly but from inside that's impossible ,my research was top research but i couldn't receive it because they want only one person.

You are a lifesaver, thank you for all the information, because getting anything from the net about Monbusho is almost impossible, it was of great help. I'm planning on applying this year in may, I'm from Maceodonia, the Balkans, and I would like to study linguistics in Kyoto, so I'm working very hard all the time. I'm studying Japanese and it's going pretty good, but will see if my level will be sufficient.
Thank you again.

Thanks a lot Lars for this useful resource! I'm working on my proposal now. I think you have saved me a lot of trouble by writing out your process of application. I'm very grateful!

Hi Lars,

Thank you for sharing your experience. I am preparing for the exam. For me, English test really beats me. Can you give more sources useful for English exam?

By the way, last years exam papers was very valuable to me.

Hey Lars,

Thank you for sharing your experience with the world.
I have started searching for a Japanese professor since one year ago, and I was happy to meet a nice one in July.
He accepted me already, as long as I get the scholarship this year. The project also is done, since February.
Well, let´s see how it goes. In my city, I heard there are around 6 scholarships for about 300 people.
By the way, researching about breast cancer here.

See ya.

Can fill out my application for me?
Just kidding. I'm a current JET in Akita and starting the Monbu process myself. Thanks so much for your insight. I am applying for oil painting at Tokyo Geijutu Daigaku, although I am making cartoons of my JET experience as well. Elementary school is a vast wealth of humor and inspiration.
